Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball drops two to Stonehill

RINDGE, N.H. The American International baseball team dropped a pair in a double header, 8-2 and 5-1, to Stonehill at Franklin Pierce's Dr. Pappas Field Thursday afternoon.

With the losses AIC falls to 5-7, while the two wins propel the Skyhawks to 12-5 overall.

Due to poor field conditions in both Springfield and Easton the two headed to the turf field of Franklin Pierce to fit in a crucial double header.

In the opening game, AIC starting pitcher David Kerlejza (Unionville, Conn.) went six strong, allowing a single earned run and striking out seven.

The Skyhawks got to Yellow Jacket reliever Brian Karp (Bellmore, N.Y.) in the seventh, blasting a two-run shot. Three eighth inning doubles plated four Stonehill base runners to put them up 8-1.

Freshman Andy Cherico (Rehoboth, Mass.) sent in AIC's first run in the home half of the seventh, a sacrifice fly to right field to send Mike Coyne (El Cajon, Calif.) home from third.

Dan Fenton (Agawam, Mass.) knocked a homer to left center in the bottom of the eighth.

The Skyhawks outhit American International 14-8,

In the finale the Yellow Jackets got on the board first in the bottom of the first. Fenton stole third and advanced to home on a throwing error from the Skyhawk catcher.

Stonehill would spread out runs from there starting in the fourth with a two RBI double.

AIC freshman hurler Harrison Paige (Springfield, Mass.) took his first loss of the season, allowing four earned over seven and two-thirds innings. He struck out nine and walked just three.

Sophomore reliever Kevin Arduino (Cornwall, N.Y.) pitched the remainder, allowing a single earned run and striking out one.

Lucas Vallas (East Northport, N.Y.) finished the day 3-for-7, including a two-hit performance in game two. Senior Dan Asselin (Chicopee, Mass.) was 3-for-4 in the opener. Cherico and Fenton had the only two RBI's.

The Yellow Jackets are scheduled to return to action Sunday, March 23 in a double header against Bentley. First pitch is slated for noon from AIC Park.
