Falcons sweep baseball doubleheader

HAVERHILL, Mass.-The American International College baseball team suffered a pair of setbacks to the Bentley Falcons, falling 12-1 and 6-2 to their Northeast-10 rivals on a cold and windy Sunday afternoon in Haverhill.

In game one, the Falcons scored at least a run in each of the first eight frames; most notably, they broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead. AIC's lone run of the first game came in the seventh, thanks to a leadoff double by junior right fielder David Kerlejza (Unionville, Conn.) and an RBI groundout by freshman second baseman Anthony Crudale (Cranston, R.I.).

Sophomore starting pitcher Derek Azzopardi (Redwood City, Calif.) lasted just 3.1 innings for the Jackets, allowing seven runs (five earned) on five hits, four walks, and three hit batsmen in the loss.

In the second game, with Bentley acting as the home squad, the Jackets were haunted by miscues. Bentley scored twice in the second thanks to two errors, and then were able to hit a three-run home run in the following frame when AIC committed another error.

AIC got two back in the eighth thanks to a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch from freshman first baseman Kevin White and then an RBI groundout by Crudale, before ultimately leaving them loaded in the frame and the following one.

Senior lefty Matt Lee (Weymouth, Fla.) was strong, going seven innings and allowing just two earned runs of the six scored for Bentley,

Up next, the Jackets are scheduled to host Saint Rose on Wednesday, March 26 at 3:30 p.m.
