NEW HAVEN, Mass. The American International men's basketball team defeated the second ranked Southern Connecticut Owls on the road Saturday at Moore Field House in Northeast-10 Conference action, 100-91.
With the win AIC improves to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in NE-10 play, while with the loss SCSU falls to 7-1 and 3-1 in conference action.
Yellow Jacket junior forward Trahmier Burrell (Albany, N.Y.) helped lead the team in the second half and keep the Owls at bay, registering 17 points in the second frame. AIC heled a slim 48-46 edge heading into the half and outscored SCSU 52-45 in the final half.
AIC shot nearly 50 percent for the game from the field and just over 60 percent in the second to keep the potent Owl offense behind them. Southern Connecticut entered the game averaging 101.0 points, by far the highest average in the NE-10.
Burrell finished the game with 25 and 11 boards, his second double-double of the season, but senior guard Bobby Harris (Berlin, N.J.) scored a team-high 27. Senior Al Shabazz-Jabateh (East Orange, N.J.) was plugged into the starting lineup for the first time and scored 13, while Nolan Woodward (Montreal, Quebec) chipped in 14 off the bench.
Saturday marks the first win for AIC over a ranked team since Jan. 8, 2014 when they defeated No. 20 Franklin Pierce and the highest points scored since a 100-96 loss in the NCAA Division II Tournament to Bloomfield.
The Yellow Jackets return to action next Saturday, Dec. 13 at Pace for an NE-10 tilt with the Setters. Tip-off is slated for 3:30 p.m.
