EASTON, Mass. Senior
Jenna Masionis (Ashland, Mass.) continued her stellar play and helped American International extend their win streak to six with a 2-1 victory over No. 4 Stonehill in Northeast-10 field hockey action.
With the win the Yelllow Jackets improve to 10-6 overall and 6-3 in conference play while the Skyhawks fall to 13-3 on the year and 6-2 in the NE-10.
Both teams traded posessions in the first half of the opening frame trying to feel each other out at first.
Then it was AIC who generated the first offense as junior
Erica McLean (Branford, Conn.) blasted a shot off the post at the 19:18 mark.
However, the Yellow Jackets retained possession in the offensive zone and it was Masionis who struck for the first goal of the game just 23 seconds later as she grabbed a lose ball off a deflected pass and deposited it into the back of the cage for the 1-0 edge.
The Black and Gold had a golden opportunity to go into the break up by two, but senior midfielder Nicole Ciccia (Monroe, Conn.) sacrificed her body and stopped a shot by sophomore
Shea Homer (Glens Falls, N.Y.) for the defensive save at the 32:58 mark.
Stonehill responded quickly, coming out of the locker room and potting the equalizer as junior Erika Kelly (Watertown, Mass.) ripped one on net that was deflected in at the 37:23 mark.
Then, at 43:50, Skyhawk senior Jennifer Foley (Holden, Mass.) almost broke the deadlock, but it was Yellow Jacket senior co-captain
Amanda Johannes (Killingworth, Conn.) who made the defensive stop to keep the contest tied 1-1.
Sophomore
Emma Heroth (Johnstown, N.Y.) had a bid to give AIC the lead again at 51:28, but was stonewalled by Stonehill senior Elizabeth Genovese (Street, Md.), keeping the contest tied.
Masionis then struck again, this time at 58:49, as she ripped home a rebound on the right side of the cage, off Homer's initial shot that was saved, for the 2-1 lead.
The goal for Masionis, her 17th of the season, set yet another milestone in her storybook season as it gives her 100 career points; she becomes the first Yellow Jacket to accomplish this feat in program history.
Stonehill had one last ditch effort, as with just five seconds remaining, junior Lauren Giordano (Watertown, Mass.) sent one on net, only to be turned aside by AIC junior netminder
Ainslee Penfield (Greenfield, Mass.) to preserve the victory.
Penfield stopped all four shots she faced to improve to 10-6 on the season as junior
Erin Maroney (Chicopee, Mass.) allowed the lone goal while Penfield was serving a green card. Genovese made five saves in the setback to fall to 13-3 on the year.
The Yellow Jackets held the slim advantage in shots at 16-15 and 8-6 on goal while the Skyhwaks held a commanding 17-4 margin in penalty corners.
American International goes for a seventh straight conference victory as they return to the friendly confines of Abdow Field for a 4 p.m. battle with No. 3 LIU Post on Wednesday.
