SPRINGFIELD, Mass.-The American International field hockey team (4-3, 0-0 NE-10) fell to the rival Bentley Falcons (5-2, 0-0 NE-10) by a 2-0 count in a rainy match at Ronald J. Abdow Field Saturday afternoon.
Bentley scored both of their goals in a dominant first half, scoring at the 23:10 mark on a penalty corner that saw junior forward Gina Lirange (Auburn, Mass.) put the ball directly on the stick of freshman midfielder Tori Ellis (Madison, N.J.) for a heavy shot that found the cage, and adding to their lead at 29:32 when sophomore forward Sally James (Mequon, Wisc.) passed to sophomore forward Meghan Talerman (Centerville, Mass.) on a two-on-none that came after AIC mishandled the insert on a penalty corner.
AIC senior goalkeeper
Kori Huffman (Brattleboro, Vt.) stopped eight shots, including seven in the first half, in absorbing the loss to fall to 4-3 on the year, while sophomore Katie Kelley (Walpole, Mass.) improved to 5-2 on the year, making three saves in the shutout win.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Wednesday, September 25 at 7 p.m. when they head to Garden City, N.Y. to take on the Adelphi Panthers in a non-conference contest.
