DOBBS FERRY, N.Y - The American International College field hockey team (3-1, 0-0 NE-10) returned to the road and to the win column Saturday, netting a 3-1 victory over the Mercy Mavericks (0-4) Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets struck early in the contest, when sophomore midfielder
Kaylin Harbin (Stroudsburg, Pa.) passed across the circle to junior forward
Jenna Masionis (Ashland, Mass.) for her second of the year at 4:11.
AIC doubled their lead early in the second half when sophomore midfielder
Erica McLean (Branford, Conn.) took a cross from her classmate, forward
Ainslee Penfield (Greenfield, Mass.) and stuffed it in on the back post to make the score 2-0 at 43:10; the goal was McLean's first of the season.
With under two minutes to go, Harbin was awarded a penalty stroke, and converted it for her first of the season at 68:00; though Mercy would break the shutout with :54 left in regulation, it would not matter as the Yellow Jackets earned the win.
Senior goalkeeper
Kori Huffman (Brattleboro, Vt.) made three saves in the win to improve to 3-1 on the season, while her counterpart and classmate Kristen Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) stopped 11 shots in the loss, falling to 0-4 on the year.
The Yellow Jackets next head to East Haven, Conn. this Tuesday for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Southern Connecticut State University Owls; the matchup is considered a non-conference contest.
