SPRINGFIELD, Mass. The American International College field hockey team is set to play seventh ranked LIU-Post in a non-conference game tonight at Ronald J. Abdow Field, slated to start at 7 p.m.
SETTING THE SCENE: The Yellow Jackets return to action after their weekend in Pennsylvania that saw them defeat Slippery Rock 3-2 in overtime and Seton Hill 3-2 in regulation. LIU-Post is playing their first game of the season.
ABOUT AIC: Junior defender Amanda Johannes (Killingworth, Conn. ) and senior midfielder Courtney Williams (Westfield, Mass.) each netted two goals apiece on the teams opening trip. Senior goalkeeper Kori Huffman made 18 saves for a .818 saves percentage. The Yellow Jackets opened their season 2-0 for the first time recent memory.
ABOUT LIU-POST: LIU-Post, ranked No. 7 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll, is opening their season today at Abdow Field. The Pioneers were tabbed third in Northeast-10 (NE-10) preseason poll, 2013 marks their first year in the NE-10 after leaving the Penn State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Post returns Carlee Dragon (Bridgewater, N.J.) and Keliann Margiotta (Sewell, N.J.) who combined for 73 Pioneer points in 2012.
LAST TIME THEY MET: On Oct. 26, 2010, AIC defeated LIU 3-2 on a goal by Katrina Heterbring '11 and two goals by Amanda McLean '12, with her second coming on a penalty stroke with just 1:29 to play. Kim Steiner '12, made 14 saves in the win.
NEXT UP: The Yellow Jackets head to Dobby Ferry, N.Y. to take on the Mercy Mavericks on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 1 p.m.
