Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Saint Michael's

COLCHESTER, Vt. – The American International College baseball team split a Northeast-10 doubleheader at Saint Michael's College on Sunday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets move to 13-11 overall and 4-7 in the conference, while the Purple Knights are now 7-16 overall and 4-9 in the NE-10.

In game one, AIC got on the board in the top of the first inning when sophomore Lucas Vallas (East Northport, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to left field. Saint Mike's tied the contest at 1-1 when senior Jacob Begnoche (Essex Junction, Vt.) hit an RBI single through the right side.

The Yellow Jackets earned a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning when junior Dan Fenton (Agawam, Mass.) singled to third base and later scored on a wild pitch.

Vallas hit another RBI single in the top of the fifth, while sophomore David Kerlejza (Unionville, Conn.) plated two Yellow Jackets when he singled to right center field and extended AIC's lead to 5-2. AIC pushed the lead to 7-2 in the top of the seventh when freshman Zach Kane (New London, Conn.) hit an RBI single to center field, and Kerlejza hit an RBI double to left field.

The Purple Knights scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 7-4 game, while scoring two more runs in the bottom of the ninth for a close 7-6 contest with AIC earning the victory.

Freshman pitcher Derek Azzopadi (Redwood City, Calif.) earned the win on the hill for the Yellow Jackets throwing five innings and allowing two runs on four hits and striking out five, while senior Geoff McCowat (Sterling, Va.) earned the save throwing one inning and allowing two runs on three hits. Rich Reo took the loss for Saint Michael's throwing 4.1 innings, and allowed five runs on five hits and struck out two.

In game two, Valley hit a double to left field and crossed home later in the inning on a pass ball, and three more Purple Knights would cross home plate to earn a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.

The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the top of the fifth inning to cut the gap down to 4-2, as junior Cam MacConald (Weymouth, Mass.) hit an RBI single to center field and Asselin hit an RBI single through the left side.

In the sixth inning sophomore Mike Coyne (El Cajon, Calif.) doubled down the left field line, and advanced to third on the throw. Coyne crossed home when Kane hit an RBI single to third base to inch within one, 4-3. Saint Michael's earned the 4-3 victory.

Kerlejza took the loss for AIC throwing five innings and allowing four runs on five hits and striking out five batters, while freshman Curt Echo (Shelburne, Vt.) earned the win for the Purple Knights throwing eight innings and allowing three runs on 10 hits and striking out three. Junior Corey Livingston (Manchester, Conn.) earned the save pitching the ninth inning and striking out one batter.

The Yellow Jackets will travel to Le Moyne on Wednesday afternoon for a 3:30 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
