NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The American International College baseball team won the second game of a Northeast-10 Southwest Division doubleheader at Southern Connecticut State University 7-2 after falling in game-one 5-2 Saturday afternoon. The Owls took two out three games from the Yellow Jackets over the weekend.
AIC's record now stands at 17-19 for the season, 5-15 in the NE-10 and 5-12 in the Southwest Division, while SCSU is now 20-17-1 overall, 10-13 in the NE-10 and 6-11 in the Southwest Division.
The Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second in game-one when junior catcher
Dan Fenton scored on freshman shortstop
Eddie Ritch's double, but the Owls answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame to take a 2-1 lead.
Senior first baseman A.J. Rouleau scored on a wild pitch to tie the game and sophomore third baseman Brandon Docimo scored the go-ahead run on junior catcher T.J. Shea's ground out to second. Docimo then scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the fourth after senior left fielder Colin Dickinson reached on an error.
AIC pulled back within one when junior third baseman/shortstop
Cam MacDonald scored on junior left fielder
Dan Asselin's double down the left field line in the top of the fifth, but that was as close as the Yellow Jackets would get as Southern Connecticut tacked on one run in the home half of the fifth and eight innings for the 5-2 final.
Senior Steve Landell improved to 1-2 after allowing two runs on six hits with 12 strikeouts in six innings of work, while sophomore Pat Egan tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his fifth save of the year. Freshman
Harrison Paige fell to 3-3 after allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits and three walks with five strikeouts in seven innings.
Asselin gave AIC an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first in game-two with a two-run blast over the fence in left, and sophomore designated hitter
Lucas Vallas scored what would be the game-winning run in the top of the third on freshman third baseman
Tyler Geffert's sac fly to center.
The Yellow Jackets scored twice in the top of the fourth as junior center fielder
Dave Clark scored from third on a double steal before Vallas' single up the middle scored MacDonald from second, and Asselin drove in a pair of runs with a two-out bases-loaded single to left in the eighth to cap the scoring in the game.
The Owls scored their only two runs in the bottom of the fifth when Shea and freshman designated hitter Jake DeRosa crossed the plate on senior center fielder Michael Cleary's two-out single up the middle. Southern Connecticut only had two other scoring opportunities, but left runners on the corners in the bottom of the second and stranded runners at first and second in the bottom of the ninth.
Asselin finished 3-for-4 at the dish in the second game with four RBI and a run scored, while Vallas went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks, two runs scored and one driven in. MacDonald was 1-for-4 with a walk and also scored twice.
Freshman
