SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—The American International College baseball team (8-7, 1-3 NE-10, 0-2 SW Division) committed seven errors and gave up 13 hits en route to a 9-0 defeat at the hands of the New Haven Chargers (12-4, 6-0 NE-10, 2-0 SW Division) Friday evening at AIC Park.
New Haven scored two in the first inning on a throwing error and then a straight steal of home, added two more in the third when sophomore first baseman Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine) slammed a two run home run to left field, added another in the fifth on an RBI double by junior designated hitter Chris DeMorais (West Hartford, Conn.), scored three in the eighth on a three-run shot by freshman shortstop Nick Nunziato (Setauket, N.Y.), and added a final run in the ninth on a fielding error.
Taking the loss for AIC was junior pitcher
Daniel Guerrero (Elizabeth, N.J.), who gave up five runs (three earned) on 10 hits while striking out six and walking none in seven innings to fall to 1-2 on the year. The winning pitcher was junior Henry Hirsch (Scarsdale, N.Y.), who tossed 5.0 innings of three-hit shutout relief while fanning nine. In all, Charger pitching combined for 13 Ks while allowing just eight hits.
The Yellow Jackets will get another crack at New Haven tomorrow when they host the Chargers for a doubleheader beginning at noon at AIC Park; AIC is expected to start junior left-handed pitcher
Matt Lee (Stratford, Conn.) against senior right-handed pitcher Frank Vilacha (Dartmouth, Mass.) in the first game, while freshman right-handed pitcher
Harrison Paige (Springfield, Mass.) will battle junior left-handed pitcher Pat Simone (Branford, Conn.) in the second matchup.
