Baseball Splits Doubleheader vs. New Haven

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The American International College baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision in game one before earning an 8-4 win in game two against New Haven on Saturday afternoon at AIC Park. The Yellow Jackets move to 9-8 overall and 2-4 in the conference, while the Chargers move to 13-5 overall and 7-1 in the NE-10.

In game one, the contest remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when designated hitter Chris DeMorais (West Hartford, Conn.) hit an RBI single to center field. The Yellow Jackets answered in the bottom of the frame when junior Dave Clark (West Springfield, Mass.) hit an RBI single to right center, and sophomore Lucas Vallas (East Northport, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Clark to earn the 2-1 lead.

The Chargers scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning when left fielder Kyle Cullen (Dumont, N.J.) tripled to right center field, while right fielder Stephen Clout (Bristol, Conn.) hit an RBI single up the middle.

Junior Matt Lee (Stratford, Conn.) took the loss as he went 7.2 innings allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out four, while senior Frank Vilacha (Dartmouth, Mass.) earned the win pitching seven innings and allowing only two runs on three hits and fanning four.

In game two, the Chargers earned a 1-0 lead in the first inning when junior Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn.) singled and was plated on DeMorais' single to left field.

The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Clark singled through the left side, and then Vallas singled down the left field line and advanced Clark to third. Vallas moved to second on a balk, while Clark scored on the balk. Sophomore Mike Coyne (El Cajon, Calif.) hit a homerun over the left center fence to give AIC a 3-1 lead.

The Charger's made it a 4-3 contest in the top of the eighth inning, before the Yellow Jackets answered with five runs in the bottom of the frame to earn the 8-4 victory.

In the bottom of the eighth inning Clark hit an RBI double to left field, Coyne plate two on his single to left field, and freshman Zach Kane (New London, Conn.) also plated two on his single up the middle.

Senior Geoff McCowat (Sterling, Va.) earned the win on the hill for AIC as he threw 1.2 innings and stuck up four, while senior Taylor Candage (Portland, Maine) took the loss only going 0.1 and giving up four runs on two hits.

The Yellow Jackets will host Nyack College on Monday afternoon for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference contest at AIC Park.
