Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Overtime PK Lifts Merrimack Past Men's Soccer Team 1-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The lone goal of the match was scored on the penalty kick in the 105th-minute as the American International College men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 Northeast-10 contest to Merrimack College Sunday afternoon at Ronald J. Abdow Field.

The Warriors improved to 4-2-1 overall and 2-2-0 in the NE-10 with the win, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 2-6-0 overall and 2-2-0 in conference play with the loss.

Senior back Alejandro Fuchs (Caracas, Venezuela) scored the lone goal of the game 4:35 into the second overtime period after AIC was called for a foul in the box following a Merrimack corner kick. Junior keeper Jason Ryan (Peabody, Mass.) dove to his right but the shot but the shot went in the opposite direction to give the Warriors the golden goal win.

Sophomore keeper Jose Silva (Northborough, Mass.) needed to make just two saves to earn the win in goal, while Ryan had eight stops in taking the loss for the Yellow Jackets.

Merrimack had a 24-9 advantage in the shots, but the match was much closer than that indicates as time of possession was virtually even and AIC had a number of set pieces that were broken up by Silva before a shot could be directed on goal. The Warriors also had the edge in corner kicks, 7-2.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action Wednesday when they host a Northeast-10 match against the University of New Haven. The game will get under way starting at 7 p.m. at Ronald J. Abdow Field.
