SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior
Lisa Duckles (Netcong, N.J.) scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 63rd-minute, to lead the American international College field hockey team to a 3-2 non-conference victory over Adelphi University Tuesday afternoon at Ronald J. Abdow Field.
The Yellow Jackets improved to 1-6 for the season as first-year head coach Chrissy Needham picked up her first victory at AIC. The Panthers fell to 0-8 for the season.
The Yellow Jackets controlled play in the early stages of the game and took an early 1-0 lead when sophomore
Jenna Masionis (Ashland, Mass.) carried the ball in from the top of the circle and let loose a rocket that beat Adelphi senior Kristine Puzio (Holbrook, N.Y.) just 4:49 into the contest. The lead grew to 2-0 for AIC when Duckles fired a shot into the cage from the top-left of the circle after receiving a penalty corner from senior
Mackenzie Kewley (Rutland, Mass.) at 15:21.
The Panthers managed to get on the board in the closing seconds of the first half when freshman Molly Cuevas (San Jose, Calif.) tipped home a shot from senior Emily Rahner (Setauket, N.Y.) with four seconds left on the clock. Adelphi would later tie the game in the 56th-minute when senior Erin Grekin (Holtsville, N.Y.) chipped the ball in off a scramble in front of the cage.
AIC picked up the pace in the final 10 minutes and had a number of quality scoring chances before Duckles found the back of the cage again when she fired a shot off a corner from freshman
Erica McLean (Branford, Conn.) that broke through Puzio's pads with 7:14 remaining in the contest.
Junior
Kori Huffman (Brattleboro, Vt.) made three saves while earning the first win of her collegiate career for the Yellow Jackets and improve her record to 1-6. Puzio had seven saves in taking the loss for the Panthers, dropping her record to 0-5.
Adelphi outshot AIC 18-17 in the game and had an 11-9 advantage in penalty corners.
The Yellow Jackets will next travel to Assumption College Thursday for a 7 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
