NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The American International College men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 double-overtime loss against Dominican (N.Y.) College Thursday afternoon in the first game of the Merrimack Classic. It was the season-opener for both teams.

The Chargers struck first following a scoreless first half when junior Jorge Zubillaga (Punta del Este, Uruguay) one-timed a cross from classmate Sony Narro (Stamford, Conn.) into the back of the net in the 6:28 into the second frame. The score remained that way until freshman Frazer Cronin (Bromley, England) put home a bouncing ball off a corner kick from senior Conor Doyle (Douglas, Isle of Man) with just 1:13 left in regulation.

The Yellow Jackets dominated play following the Dominican goal for the remainder of regulation that resulted in a number of golden scoring opportunities, including a chance in the closing minute as Doyle had a shot blocked and another opportunity at a corner kick, but AIC was unable to get the would-be game-winner.

The Yellow Jackets got another shot with a corner kick with 2:07 remaining in overtime that the Chargers were able to defend and immediately push play the other way. That resulted in Zuvillaga scoring his second goal of the game off a drop pass from senior Dennis Kcira (New City, N.Y.) with just 1:03 to go.

Junior Andres Ruiz (Medellin, Colombia) made three saves to earn the win in goal for Dominican, while fellow junior Jason Ryan (Peabody, Mass.) had nine stops in taking the loss in goal for AIC.

The Chargers held a slim 16-15 edge in total shots, but put 11 of those shots on net to just four shots on goal for the Yellow Jackets. Dominican also had a slight advantage in corner kicks, 9-7.

AIC will next face Post University Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Merrimack Classic.
