NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The American International College baseball team earned a 13-10 non-conference victory over Merrimack College on Thursday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets move to 12-19-1 overall, while the Warriors overall record is now 17-20.
Sophomore
Dave Clark (West Springfield, Mass.) started the game by hitting a single through the left side and was later plated as senior pitcher Bill Humphrey (South Easton, MA) walked in a run to give AIC a 1-0 lead.
Junior Alan Pastyrnak (Bristol, CT) led off the bottom of the first with a single to center and advanced to second on a balk. Senior Tim Curran (Weymouth, MA) followed with a double down the right field line to score Pastyrnak from second and tie the game. Junior Joe Mantoni's (Northbridge, MA) single through the left side of the infield plated Curran to give Merrimack the 2-1 lead.
The Yellow Jackets responded with a strong second inning scoring seven runs to earn an 8-2 lead. The Warriors scored three runs to cut the deficit to 8-5.
In the top of the fifth inning sophomore
Cam MacDonald (Weymouth, Mass.) singled to right center, while senior
Kyle McNiff (Westford, Mass.) hit a double to left center to score MacDonald. Classmate
Julian Concepcion singled up the middle, advanced to second on the throw and McNiff scored for a 10-6 lead.
Sophomore
Dan Asselin (Chicopee, Mass.) singled to right field, stole second base and took third on a wild pitch. Asselin crossed home when Clark hit a sacrifice fly to right field. AIC would go on to score two more runs to earn a 13-10 victory over Merrimack.
Freshman
David Kerlejza (Unionville, Conn.) earned the win for the Yellow Jackets throwing 5.0 innings, allowing eight runs on 11 hits and striking out three batters. Humphrey took the loss while only pitching 1.1 innings, allowing seven runs on two hits and striking out three batters.
AIC will travel to Adelphi University on Friday afternoon for a 3:30 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
