SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior first baseman
Julian Concepcion (Woodstock Valley, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with a pair of solo homers, but it was not enough as the American International College baseball team dropped a 6-5 Northeast-10 Southwest Division game to visiting Pace University Sunday afternoon at AIC park.
The Setters, who swept the three-game weekend set, improved to 20-14 overall, 10-7 in the NE-10 and 8-1 in the Southwest Division. The Yellow Jackets fell to 11-18-1 overall, 4-12-1 in the NE-10 and 1-7-1 in the Southwest Division.
AIC got out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when sophomore third baseman
Dave Clark (West Springfield, Mass.) scored from third on a sacrifice fly from Concepcion before sophomore shortstop Chris Gili (Waccabuc, N.Y.) drove in two runs with a bases-loaded double down the left field line in the top of the second.
The score remained 2-1 in Pace's favor before senior first baseman Joe Lombardi (Briarcliff, N.Y.) led off the top of the sixth with a solo shot to right and the Setters added three runs that inning on a two-out error in the outfield with the bases loaded that gave Pace a 6-1 lead.
The Yellow Jackets got three runs back in the bottom of the seventh to pull within two runs at 6-4. Concepcion led off the frame with a solo homerun to left that was followed by a double to left center for freshman designated hitter
Lucas Vallas (East Northport, N.Y.), who then scored on sophomore center fielder
Dan Asselin's (Bennington, Vt.) single down the left field line. Asselin would score from third two batters later as senior left fielder
Dennis Duffy (Warwick, R.I.) lifted a sac-fly to left.
Concepcion then cut AIC's deficit to one with another solo blast to left that trimmed Pace's lead to 6-5, but the scoring ended there for the Yellow Jackets as the Setters held on for the win.
Sophomore Brian Sundberg (Westbury, N.Y.) earned the decision after giving up five runs on six hits and four walks with four strikeouts in seven and two-third, while junior Edward Byrne (Yonkers, N.Y.) didn't allow a base runner in the final one and one-third to earn the save.
Junior
Matt Lee (Stratford, Conn.) took the loss after allowing six runs (three earned) on 10 hits with six strikeouts in seven innings. Senior
Tim Bailey (Chicopee, Mass.) allowed just one hit with two Ks in two scoreless innings of relief.
Junior catcher Joe Solomeno (Holbrook, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the Setters, while Gili finished the dat 2-for-4 with two RBI.
AIC will next host a Northeast-10 Southwest Division game against Assumption College Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at AIC Park
