Greyhounds Race Past Baseball Team 8-2

WORCESTER, Mass. – Assumption College scored two runs in each of the first four innings as it recorded an 8-2 Northeast-10 Southwest Division win over the American International College baseball team Wednesday afternoon.

The Greyhounds improved to 7-16 overall, 1-10 in the NE-10 and 1-4 in the Southwest Division, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 10-15-1 overall, 4-9-1 in the NE-10 and 1-4-1 in the Southwest Division.

Assumption got a pair of RBI singles from senior catcher Tim Quinn (Paxton, Mass.) and freshman second baseman Kelvin Sims (Manchester, Conn.) in the bottom of the first and junior left fielder Nick Napoli (Medford, Mass.) scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the second, crossing the plate as junior designated hitter Michael Filice (South Salem, N.Y.) reached on an error. Sophomore center fielder Ysander Figueroa (Worcester, Mass.) then scored on a sacrifice fly from junior shortstop Shane Keddy (Worcester, Mass.) to give the Greyhounds a 4-0 lead after two.

AIC finally got on the board trailing 8-0 in the top of the ninth when senior right fielder Kyle McNiff (Westford, Mass.) and freshman Colin Sledzik (Higganum, Conn.), who was used as a pinch hitter, scored on an error with two out in the inning.

Sims went 4-for-5 at the plate with a double, two RBI and a run scored, while Quinn went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one driven in. Napoli went 2-for-3 with a homerun, two RBI and two runs scored.

Sophomore designated hitter Dave Clark (West Springfield, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles for AIC, which managed just five hits in the game.

Junior Dan Bradley (Moodus, Conn.) earned the decision after scattering three hits with five strikeouts in six innings of work. Junior Matt Lee (Stratford, Conn.) took the loss after getting touched up for eight runs (four earned) on 12 hits in three and one-third innings.

The two teams will meet again Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at AIC Park for a non-conference game.
