WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The American International College went 0-1-1 in a Northeast-10 doubelheader at the University of New Haven Sunday, dropping game-one 14-10 before game-two was called after 10 innings due to rain with the score knotted at 2-2.
The Chargers improved to 12-6-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the Northeast-10, while the Yellow Jackets' record moved to 6-11-1 overall and 1-5-1 in conference play.
New Haven exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the second in a wild game-one. Freshman designated hitter Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine) parked the first pitch he saw to lead off the inning to start the scoring before junior right fielder Stephen Clout (Bristol, Conn.) cleared the bases with a triple to left center. Collett then drove in his second run of the inning with a RBI-single to center and junior second baseman Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn.) capped the scoring in the inning with a two-RBI triple to center.
AIC got right back in the game with a five-run third on a pair of two-RBI doubles off the bat of senior right fielder
Kyle McNiff (Westford, Mass.) and sophomore designated hitter
Dave Clark (West Springfield, Mass.) and a sac-fly from freshman third baseman
Lucas Vallas (East Northport, N.Y.), but he Chargers answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and pushed four more across in the fourth with the help of three Yellow Jacket errors in the inning to take a 14-5 lead.
AIC scored five more times in the game, scoring one run in the seventh and plating four runs in the eight, but were unable to come all the way back as New Haven held on for the win. McNiff drove in a run with a single in the sixth and a double in the eighth, while freshman
Zach LeBlanc (Fairhaven, Mass.) was credited with an RBI after drawing a bases loaded walk and two runs scored after sophomore catcher
Dan Fenton (Agawam, Mass.) reached on an error.
Junior Frank Vilacha (Dartmouth, Mass.) earned the decision after allowing one unearned run on three hits with three strikeouts in three innings of relief, while senior
John Hanna (Dudley, Mass.) took the loss after giving up eight runs on eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts in one and two-third innings.
New Haven led 2-0 through six in game-two after Clout scored on an error in the fifth and Collett scored on a passed ball in the sixth before the Yellow Jackets scored twice in the top of the seventh for what proved to be the 2-2 final. Fenton drove in Clark with a single to left and senior first baseman
Julian Concepcion (Woodstock Valley, Conn.) scored on a sacrifice fly from senior left fielder
Dennis Duffy (Warwick, R.I.).
AIC could have pulled out the second game if not for two plays at the plate that both went in the Chargers favor. Junior shortstop
Chris Amate (Hanover, Mass.) led off the sixth with a double and drew a walk to start the eight, and was thrown out at home in each of those innings.
The Yellow Jackets will look to get back in the win column Tuesday when they host a Northeast-10 contest against Assumption College at 3:30 p.m. at AIC Park.
