SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior
Matt Lee (Stratford, Conn.) tossed a five-hit complete-game shutout as the American International College baseball team posted a 4-0 Northeast-10 Southwest Division win over Assumption College Tuesday afternoon at AIC Park.
The Yellow Jackets improved to 7-11-1 overall, 2-5-1 in the NE-10 and 1-2-1 in the Southwest Division with the victory, while the Greyhounds fell to 6-12 overall, 0-7 in the NE-10 and 0-4 in division games.
AIC took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third as senior right fielder
Kyle McNiff (Westford, Mass.) singled to right to drive in senior left fielder
Dennis Duffy (Warwick, R.I.) and advance junior shortstop
Chris Amate (Hanover, Mass.) to third. Amate then scored on a double steal with senior second baseman
Nicholas Devine (Springfield, Mass.) at the plate.
The Yellow Jackets added another pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth as sophomore designated hitter
Dave Clark (West Springfield, Mass.) singled up the middle to drive in Devine, stole second and came around to score on a single through the right side off the bat of senior first baseman
Julian Concepcion (Woodstock Valley, Conn.), who went 3-for-4 on the day.
Assumption did have two quality scoring chances in the game, but stranded runners on first and second in the first and left the bases loaded in the fourth.
Lee evened his record at 1-1 with the victory for the Yellow Jackets. Senior Nick Peters (Natick, Mass.) suffered the loss on the hill for the Greyhounds, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits with three strikeouts in five and one-third innings of work, dropping his record to 0-3.
AIC will next travel to Bentley University for a Northeast-10 doubleheader Saturday starting at noon.
