Greyhounds Race Past Baseball Team 17-5

WORCESTER, Mass. – The American International College baseball team dropped a 17-5 non-conference contest at Assumption College Wednesday afternoon. The Greyhounds improved to 5-5 with the win, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 5-6 with the loss.

AIC got out to a 1-0 in the top of the first when junior center fielder Darien Brown (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) scored on senior second baseman Nicholas Devine's (Springfield, Mass.) ground out to short before Assumption played four runs in the bottom of the second on junior left fielder Nick Napoli's (Medford, Mass.) grand slam to take a 4-1 lead after two.

The Greyhounds plated one run in the third and two runs in the fourth before blowing the game open with a seven-run fifth to open a commanding 14-2 lead.

Napoli finished the game 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored, while senior third baseman Travis Smith (Coventry, R.I.) went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored and senior catcher Tim Quinn (Paxton, R.I.) went 2-for-2 with three runs scored. Freshman second baseman Kelvin Sims (Manchester, Conn.) was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Sophomore designated hitter Dave Clark (West Springfield, Mass.) had the only multi-hit game for the Yellow Jackets, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one driven in. Devine went 1-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored, while sophomore shortstop Cam MacDonald (Weymouth, Mass.) went 1-for-1 while drawing three walks and scored a run.

Junior Dan Bradley (Moodus, Conn.) earned the decision after allowing one run on five hits in three innings of relief after senior Ben Hastings (Norton, Mass.) allowed one unearned run on one hit and three walks in the first three innings. Sophomore Daniel Guerrero (Elizabeth, N.J.) gave up seven runs (three earned) on seven hits in 3.2 innings in taking the loss.

AIC will look to bounce back when it hosts a Northeast-10 doubleheader against Southern New Hampshire University Saturday at noon at AIC Park.
