SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The American International College baseball team lost both ends of a conference doubleheader against Southern New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon. The Penmen move to 19-2 overall and 2-0 in the Northeast-10, while the Yellow Jackets drop to 5-8 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
In game one, Graduate student
Kyle McNiff (Westford, Mass.) started the second inning as he singled to right field. Senior first baseman
Julian Concepcion (Woodstock Valley, Conn.) doubled down the right field line moving McNiff to third. Freshman third baseman
Lucas Vallas (East Northport, N.Y.) doubled down the left field line to plate NcNiff and Concepcion to earn a 2-0 lead.
Junior Jon Minucci (Madison, Conn.) hit a homerun for Southern New Hampshire to start the third inning to inch within one to make it a 2-1 contest. Wollerman singled to right center in the sixth inning to earn two RBIs as the Penmen take a 3-2 lead.
In the seventh, freshman Bryan Toland (Wildwood, N.J.) hit a single through the left side, while sophomore Brendan O'Brien (East Bridgewater, Mass.) doubled down the right field line to score Toland. Southern New Hampshire earned a 4-2 victory.
Senior Pitcher Brad Monroe (Hampton, N.H.) went the distance for the Penmen throwing 9.0 innings, earning 14 strike outs and allowing only 5 hits. Senior
John Hanna (Dudley, Mass.) earned the loss pitching 7.0 innings, while striking out six batters and allowing seven hits.
In game two, O'Brien from Southern N.H. was hit by a pitch, while sophomore Riley Palmer (Goffstown, N.H.) reached on a fielder's choice. O'Brien and Palmer would go on to score on senior Kevin Spatkowski (Bristol, Conn.) single down the right field line.
The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the fifth inning when Concepcion singled to center field and was plated by sophomore
Cam MacDonald's (Weymouth, Mass.) single to center field.
The Penmen put up two more runs in the top of the sixth inning to earn a 4-1 lead, while Graduate student Nick Devine (Springfield, Mass.) scored the last AIC run in the bottom of the ninth inning as he hit a homerun over the left field fence for a 4-2 final.
Senior Zach LeBarron (Bennington, Vt.) threw 7.0 innings for the Penmen, striking out nine and allowing four hits, while sophomore Alex Powers (Brewster, Mass. ) earned the save pitching 2.0 innings and striking out two.
Freshman
Ryan Acevedo (Poway, Calif.) took the loss for the Yellow Jackets as he threw 7.0 innings, striking out four, and allowing four runs on seven hits.
AIC will host Franklin Pierce University on Sunday afternoon for a 12 p.m. Northeat-10 contest.
