Men's Basketball Edges Post in Double Overtime to Close Out 2012, 96-94

WATERBURY, Conn. – The American International College men's basketball team used a six-point run midway through the second overtime period to take the lead for good on its way to a 96-94 non-conference win at Post University Sunday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets evened their record at 5-5 for the season, while the Eagles fell to 9-4.

AIC held a 69-59 lead with five minutes to go in regulation before Post closed the frame with a 15-5 run to tie the game at 74-all. The Yellow Jackets led by two after junior guard Spencer Braithwaite (Dorchester, Mass.) went 1-for-2 at the line with six seconds to go in the half and junior forward Jerry Cummings (Queens, N.Y.) answered for the Eagles as he knocked down a jumper just before time expired to force overtime.

Both teams managed just seven points in the first overtime frame, which included a three from AIC senior guard Ricky Hudson (Sewell, N.J.) that tied the game at 81 with 30 seconds left in the period. Post got a couple chances at the other end on the ensuing possession, but couldn't find the bottom of the net.

The score was knotted at 86 two minutes into the second overtime before Braithwaite knocked down a jumper to start a 6-0 Yellow Jacket run that gave AIC the lead for good. He followed that by hitting a pair of free throws and sophomore guard Al-Shabazz Jabateh (East Orange, N.J.) capped the spurt with a layup that made it 92-86 with 1:27 to go in the game.

Hudson led five Yellow Jackets that scored in double-figures with 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field with a pair of threes to go with five rebounds and four assists. Braithwaite scored 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor with three threes and also grabbed five boards.

Junior center David Campbell (Boston, Mass.) scored 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting to go with six boards, while junior forward Mark Ellis (Stamford, Conn.) and Jabateh added 11 and 10 points off the bench, respectively.

Junior guard Zach Krischer (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) poured in a game-high 30 points with three rebounds and two steals to lead Post, while Cummings bucketed 27 points with nine rebounds and three steals. Junior forward Travis Carbajal (Oklahoma City, Okla.) chipped in with 12 points and eight boards.

The Yellow Jackets shot an impressive 62.7 percent (37-59) from the field and 55.6 percent (10-18) from three in the game, while Post shot 38.6 percent (32-83) from the floor and 41.9 percent (13-31) from downtown.

AIC will next host a Northeast-10 contest against Adelphi University January 5, 2013. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. at Henry A. Butova Gymnasium.
