EASTON, Mass. – The American International College baseball team dropped both ends of a Northeast-10 doubleheader at Stonehill College on Sunday afternoon, falling in game-one 9-3 and game-two 6-5. The Skyhawks improved to 19-7 overall and 4-2 in the NE-10, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 8-12 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
Stonehill got out to an early when junior Rich McHugh (Pembroke, Mass.) hit a grand slam in the first inning. The Skyhawks went up 6-0 in the first after sophomore Michael Zeiner (Simsbury, Conn.) hit a two run home run. The Yellow Jackets finally got on the board in the top of the ninth with a string of four hits and three runs.
Senior Bryan Galligan (Brockton, Mass.) earned the victory for Stonehill after pitching six innings and allowing two hits with 11 strike outs, while junior
John Hanna (Dudley, Mass.) took the loss after giving up nine runs on seven hits.
In game two, the Skyhawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning when Zeiner hit a two run single. AIC came within one when senior
Sean McClelland (Chicopee, Mass.) hit an RBI single in the third inning to make it a 2-1 contest. Stonehill answered back in the bottom of the third putting up two more runs to make it a 4-1 game.
Five Yellow Jackets hit a single in the sixth inning to plate four to take control of the contest with a 5-4 lead. The Skyhawks scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the 6-5 lead for good the rest of the game and to earn the victory.
Junior Michael Von Stein (Trumbull, Conn.) earned the victory for Stonehill after pitching 1.2 innings and striking out three, while senior Brenden Shepard (Boxford, Mass.) earned the save after pitching two innings and striking out five. Junior
Tim Bailey (Chicopee, Mass.) took the loss for the Yellow Jackets after only pitching 1.1 innings and giving up two runs on three hits.
Next up, AIC will travel to Adelphi University on Tuesday afternoon for a 3:30 p.m. Northeast-10 conference doubleheader.
