Early Struggles Lead to 8-2 Loss for Baseball at Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Adelphi University scored three times in each of the first two innings on its way to an 8-2 Northeast-10 victory over the American International College baseball team Wednesday afternoon. Senior catcher Anthony Arrichiello (Yonkers, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Yellow Jackets.

The Panthers improved to 17-7 overall and 7-2 in the Northeast-10 with the win, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 8-15 overll and 2-7 in conference play.

Graduate left fielder Oscar Velazquez (Astoria, N.Y.) went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored for Adelphi, while sophomore first baseman Anthony Zarrella (Holbrook, N.Y.) went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Senior Jonathan Gonzalez (New York, N.Y.) got the win on the hill after allowing two runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts in six innings of work. Freshman Cam MacDoanld (Weymouth, Mass.) took the loss after giving up six runs on six hits with four walks in 1.1 innings.

The Panthers led 3-0 after the first inning, scoring on an error, a ground out and a solo homer for Zarella, but AIC jumped right back in it with two runs in the top of the second. Arrichiello scored on a sac-fly and MacDonald later singled to score senor right fielder Kyle McNiff (Westford, Mass.)

Adelphi got all of those runs back as it pushed three across in the bottom half of the frame and held the Yellow Jackets to just four hits the rest of the game to secure the win.

The two team will meet again Thursday at AIC Park for a3 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
