Baseball Drops 9-4 Decision at Saint Rose

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The American International College baseball team dropped a 9-4 decision at Saint Rose University on Tuesday afternoon for a Northeast-10 contest. The Golden Knights improve to 14-22 overall and 7-22 in conference play, while the Yellow Jackets drop to 14-20 overall and 8-11 in the Northeast-10.

Saint Rose plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back, with the big hit one-out bases loaded double down the left field line off the bat of senior first baseman Grant Smith (Waterford, Pa.). Sophomore left fielder Caleb Gleason (Watervliet, N.Y.) then scored on freshman third baseman Jevonte Osterhout's (Albany. N.Y.) sac-fly to cap the scoring in the frame.

AIC appeared poised to answer in the top of the third after loading the bases with one out, but senior David Batchelder (Troy, N.Y.) struck out senior center fielder Mike Tranghese (Springfield, Mass.) and then got sophomore third baseman Cam MacDonald (Weymouth, Mass.) to ground out to second to end the threat. The Golden Knights then scored four times in the bottom half of the inning to take a commanding 7-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets broke through with two runs in the top of the fourth on Tranghese's two-run homer to left and tacked on two more runs in the sixth on an RBI-double from MacDonald and an RBI-single from senior catcher Anthony Arrichiello (Yonkers, N.Y.), but were never able to come all the way back.

Batchelder earned the win in the hill after giving up four runs on eight hits and five walks in six innings of work. Senior Zach Bunszell (Medford, Mass.) took the loss for AIC after getting tagged for seven runs, four earned, on seven hits in 2.2 innings.

The Yellow Jackets will next travel to Assumption College Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference contest.
