WORCESTER, Mass. – The American International College baseball team dropped a 12-4 decision at Assumption College on Wednesday afternoon for a non-conference contest. The Greyhounds improve to 13-25 overall while the Yellow Jackets drop to 14-21 overall.
In the second inning senior
Kyle McNiff (Westford, Mass.) and junior
Dennis Duffy (Warwick, R.I.) each hit a singled to get on base, while freshman
Dave Clark (West Springfield, Mass.) hit a two run triple down the right field line. Clark later scored when freshman
Dan Asselin (Chicopee, Mass.) hit an RBI single to left center.
The Yellow Jackets tallied their last run of the game in the fourth inning when McNiff reached first on a walk, stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. McNiff crossed home plate when Greyhound junior pitcher Kevin Mayone (Saugerties, N.Y.) got Duffy to ground out to third base. Assumption got on the board in the bottom of the frame and cut the deficit to 4-2.
The Greyhounds put another run on the board in the sixth inning as senior Blake Youngblood (East Freetown, Mass.) hit an RBI single up the middle. Assumption had an explosive seventh inning as the y scored six runs to take the 9-4 lead and controlled the game from here on out. Youngblood contributed in the seventh inning hitting a three run triple to left field.
The Greyhounds added three more runs in the eighth inning to earn a 12-4 victory over the Yellow Jackets.
Assumption junior Tim Quinn (Paxton, Mass.) was 4-for-3 with three runs scored, while Youngblood was 2-for-2 with one run scored and five RBIs. For the Yellow Jackets McNiff was 1-for -1 with two runs scored.
Mayone earned the victory for the Greyhounds after pitching five innings and giving up four runs on five hits and fanning three, taking the loss for AIC is freshman
Sam Morgan (Cranston, R.I.) after giving up five runs on one hit in 0.1 innings pitched.
The Yellow Jackets will host Saint Rose on Thursday afternoon for a 3:30 p.m. NE-10 contest.
