WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Senior center fielder
Mike Tranghese (Springfield, Mass.) scored on a passed ball in the top of the eighth to give the American International College baseball team a 2-1 Northeast-10 victory at the University of New Haven Wednesday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets improved to 12-19 overall and 6-10 in the Northeast-10, while the Chargers fell to 18-14 overall and 7-9 in conference play.
AIC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when freshman
Dave Clark (West Springfield, Mass.) singled to left to push across senior second baseman
Paul Maza (Valencia, Venezuela) and New Haven answered in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore Shane O'Connell (Cranston, R.I.) doubled down the left field line to score sophomore Stephen Clout (Bristol, Conn.).
The score remained that way until the eighth when Tranghese singled to first to lead off the inning, stole second, advanced to third on sophomore shortstop
Chris Amate's (Hanover, Mass.) ground out to short and came home on a passed ball.
AIC's pitching staff took over from there as sophomore
Chris Goonan (Chicopee, Mass.) stranded two runners on base in the bottom of the eighth and junior
Tim Bailey (Chicopee, Mass.) worked out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth to put the game away.
Goonan earned the decision after tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and Bailey earned the save after getting the final two outs in the ninth after entering the game with one out and the bases loaded. Senior Mitch Rossi (Bristol, Conn.) took the loss after giving up one run on two hits in two innings of relief.
The Yellow Jackets will next host a Northeast-10 doubleheader against Merrimack College Friday at noon at AIC Park.
