John Hanna (Dudley, Mass.) allowed just one run on four hits with nine strikeouts over nine innings to lead the American International College baseball team to a 4-1 Northeast-10 victory over the University of New Haven Sunday afternoon at AIC Park.
The Yellow Jackets improved to 11-18 overall and 5-10 in the Northeast-10, while the Chargers fell to 18-13 overall and 7-8 in conference play.
AIC never trailed in the game after taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as senior right fielder
Kyle McNiff (Westford, Mass.) doubled to left with one out and then scored on senior first baseman Dylan Fontaine's (Amenia, N.Y.) single to right center.
Sophomore shortstop
Chris Amate (Hanover, Mass.) hit a solo homer over the right field fence in the third, his team-leading fourth of the season, to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead and score what proved to be the game-winning run.
Fontaine delivered another RBI-single in the seven to plate sophomore third baseman
Cam MacDonald (Weymouth, Mass.) and senior catcher
Anthony Arrichiello (Yonkers, N.Y.) singled to drive in MacDonald in the eighth to cap the scoring for AIC.
New Haven scored its only run of the game in the top of the seventh when freshman left fielder Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn.) doubled to center and came around to score on sophomore second baseman Andrew Johnson's (Branford, Conn.) single to right.
Senior pitcher Alex Smith (Manchester, Conn.) went the distance in taking the loss for the Chargers, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts in eight innings of work.
AIC will next host a Northeast-10 contest against Assumption College Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at AIC Park.
