Baseball Takes Game One, Splits Doubleheader with Saint Anselm

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The American International College baseball team split a Northeast-10 conference doubleheader with Saint Anselm College on Saturday afternoon for a 10-7 victory in game one and a 6-3 loss in game two. The Yellow Jackets improve to 8-10 overall and 2-2 in conference play, while the Hawks are now 9-9 so far this season, and 1-3 in the Northeast-10.

Saint Anselm got out to an early 2-0 lead when freshman shortstop Tito Lluberes (Lawrence, Mass.) singled and advanced to second on an error by the center fielder. Sophomore first basemen Robert Kelly (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) doubled through the right side and plated Lluberes. Kelly stole third and crossed home when senior Matt Sucharewicz reached on an error and advanced to second on the throw.

AIC got off to a fast start, scoring five runs in the first inning. Junior left fielder Mike Tranghese (Springfield, Mass.) started the scoring when sophomore pitcher James Farrington (West Milford, N.J.) was called for a bases loaded balk. Farrington walked each of the first four batters he faced and later gave up a 2 RBI single to freshman third basemen Dave Clark (West Springfield, Mass) down the left field line.

The Hawks pulled within one in the top of the third inning when Lluberes singled down the left field line and advanced to second on a balk by pitcher senior pitcher Zach Bunszell (Medford, Mass.).Lluberes advanced to third when Kelly struck out on a drop third strike. Sucharewicz walked. Junior Daniel DeCoste (Chemlsford, Mass.) hit a 2 RBI triple to center field.

The Yellow Jackets scored three more runs in the bottom of the third inning to take control of the game. Clark hit an RBI double to right center field, while junior Greg Caruso (Bronx, N.Y.) hit an RBI single through the right side. Saint Anselm chipped away at the lead scoring in four different innings with seven hits but could never come back.

Bunszell earned the win after giving up four runs on four hits in 2.2 innings pitched. Farrington took the loss after getting tagged for all five runs while only getting just one out in the first.

In game two, Saint Anselm got out to an early 3-0 lead in the first when Llubered was hit by a pitch and later crossed home when Sucharewicz hit an RBI sac fly to right field. The Hawks had three runs on one hit in the first inning. AIC scored in the bottom of the second when senior right fielder Kyle McNiff (Westford, Mass.) was hit by a pitch and was plated by senior first baseman Dillon Fontaine (Amenia, N.Y.) who doubled to right center field.

Saint Anselm went up 4-1 when Kelly hit a line drive home run down the right field line. Sophomore Chris Amate (Hanover, Mass ) walked with one out, he later scored on McNiff's RBI double to right center field. The Yellow Jackets scored one run on two hits in the bottom of the ninth but could not rally for a comeback. The Hawks took a 6-3 win in game two over AIC.

Junior pitcher John Healy (Cranston, R.I.) earned the victory in game two for the Hawks after giving up only two runs on six hits in eight innings, freshman Daniel Guerrero (Elizabeth, N.J.) took the loss after giving up three runs on two hits in two innings.
