Baseball Drops 12-2 Decision at Southern Connecticut

New Haven, Conn. – No. five Southern Connecticut State University scored two runs in the bottom of the first on its way to a 12-2 Northeast-10 victory over the American International College baseball team Sunday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets drop to 8-11 overall and 2-3 in conference play, while the Hawks are improve to 19-0 so far this season, and 4-0 in the Northeast-10.

Southern Connecticut got out to an early 2-0 lead when junior first baseman Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.) hit a 2 RBI double to right field. The hawks continued the scoring in the second inning with three more runs on three hits and one error.

The Yellow Jackets finally got on the board in the sixth inning when sophomore Chris Amate (Hanover, Mass.) reached on an error by southern Connecticut's third baseman, he later stole second base. Senior right fielder Kyle McNiff (Westford, Mass.) hit an RBI single to put AIC on the board. The Yellow Jackets scored one more run in the top of the eighth when junior Darien Brown (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field. The Hawks pulled away with a 12-2 victory over AIC.

Sophomore pitcher Steve Landell (Higganum, Conn. ) earned the win after giving up one run on one hit in six innings. Junior Geoff McCowat (Sterling, Va.) took the loss for AIC after giving up eight runs on 11 hits in four innings pitched.

The Yellow Jackets will next host a Northeast-10 contest against Southern Connecticut on Wednesday at AIC Park at 3:30 p.m.
