Adelphi Outlasts Men's Basketball Team, 69-63

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The American International College men's basketball team dropped a tightly contested 69-63 Northeast-10 contest at Adelphi University Saturday afternoon. The Panthers improved to 16-9 overall and 12-9 in the NE-10, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 19-7 overall and 15-6 in conference play.

Junior forward Isiah Wallace (Springfield, Mass.) scored a game-high 20 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the field while pulling down eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Ricky Hudson (Sewell, N.J.) poured in 17 points with three assists and three rebounds off the bench, while senior guard Allen Aragbaye (Corona, Calif.) added 15 points with three boards, two assists and two steals.

Senior guard Richard Byrd (Central Islip, N.Y.) scored 19 points with four boards to lead Adelphi, while junior guard Richard Harkins (Bellmore, N.Y.) added 17 points while dishing out seven assists.

Sophomore forward Bradley Simpson (Goulburn, Australia) netted 11 points with six rebounds, and senior guard David Akinyooye (Elmont, N.Y.) fell just short of a double-double with nine points and 13 boards.

Both teams struggled to score in the first half as the Panthers took a slim 22-21 lead into the locker room at the break and used an early 11-3 run in the second half to build a 38-28 lead six minutes into the second stanza. The two teams traded runs the rest of the way, but AIC never was able to regain the lead.

Back-to-back threes from Hudson and Aragbaye brought the Yellow Jackets within two, 60-58, with 38 seconds to go in the game, but had to put Adelphi at the free throw line and the Panthers went 9-for-10 at the line to close the game and secure the win.

Adelphi shot 38.7 percent (24-62) from the field and just 19 percent (4-21) from three, while AIC whot 40.4 percent (21-52) from the floor and 40 percent (6-15). The Panthers were 17-for-21 at the free throw line, while the Yellow Jackets went 15-for-22.

AIC will close out the 2010-11 regular season Wednesday, February 23, with a 7:30 p.m. Northeast-10 contest against Pace University.
