SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The American International College men's basketball team pulled out a 66-62 Northeast-10 victory over Pace University Tuesday night at Henry A. Butova Gymnasium. Both team now own an overall record of 2-2 and are both 1-1 in the NE-10.
The Setters were in foul trouble the entire game, committing 24 fouls to just 12 for the Yellow Jackets, allowing AIC to win the game at the free throw line. The Yellow Jackets went 24-for-34 at the stripe, while Pace was 7-for-10.
Sophomore forward
David Campbell (Boston, Mass.) registered a double-double with 23 points and a game-high 12 boards for AIC, going 6-of-10 from the floor and 11-for-14 at the line. Graduate guard
Sesoo Ikpah (Williamstown, N.J.) added 20 points with five boards two assists and two steals while going 4-for-6 from the floor and 12-for-13 at the charity stripe.
Sophomore guard Denzel Primus-Devonish (Riverdale, Md.) scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Setters, going 9-for-13 from the field with four threes and four free throws. Senior guard Adrian Mills (Woodbridge, Va.) added 11 points with six boards, while sophomore forward Jonathan Merceus (Union, N.J.) added nine points with seven boards.
Pace led for most of the first half but found itself in a tied game after Ikpah converted a fast-break layup to knot the game at 22. He then put AIC ahead 24-22 with a pair of free throws with just one second left in the opening period and the Yellow Jackets never trailed the rest of the way.
Mercues tied the game at 28 with a layup before Campbell put AIC in the lead for good with a bucket of his own on the ensuing possession. The Yellow Jackets led by as many as eight on several points in the second half and held off a late charge from the Setters to record the win.
AIC shot 40 percent (20-50) from the field and just 18.2 percent (2-11) from beyond the arc, while Pace shot 43.1 percent (25-58) from the field and 27.8 percent (5-18) from three. The Yellow Jacket edged the Setters 37035 on the boards, and both team committed 16 turnovers.
The Yellow Jackets will next travel to Adelphi University Sunday for a 3:30 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
