GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Adelphi University closed the first half with a 14-5 run and never looked back on its way to a 69-54 win over the American International College men's basketball team Sunday afternoon in a Northeast-10 contest.
The Panthers improved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the Northeast-10 with the victory, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
Sophomore forward
David Campbell (Boston, Mass.) scored a game-high 18 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field and pulled down nine rebounds to lead AIC. Sophomore guard
Spencer Braithwaite (Dorchester, Mass.) added 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field with three threes with four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Adelphi used a balanced attack in the game, with five played netting at least nine points. Senior guard Robert Johnson (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and junior forward Bradley Simpson (Goulburn, Australia) led the Panthers with 12 points each. Simpson also pulled down six rebounds.
Senior guard Richard Harkins (Bellmore, N.Y.) scored 11 points with six boards, two assists and three steals, while junior guard Cliff Brown (Hempstead, N.Y.) added nine points with five boards, two assists and three steals. Junior guard Chris Ranglin (Yonkers, N.Y.) added nine points with three rebounds, three assists and two steals off the bench.
It was a close contest for most of the first half and the Yellow Jackets led 22-21 after sophomore guard
Janek Schmidkunz (Berlin, Germany) drained a three with 7:25 left in the first half. Ranglin then dropped in a layup a minute later to give Adelphi the lead for good and sparked a 14-5 run that gave the Panthers a 35-26 lead at the break.
The Yellow Jackets trailed 43-33 before going on a 6-0 run to pull back within four with 11:26 left in the second half, but Adelphi answered with a 12-0 run to open a 16-point advantage, 55-39. The Panthers led by double-digits the rest of the way to close out the win.
AIC will look to bounce back Wednesday night when it travels to Le Moyne College for a 7:30 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
