Duckles and Fernandes Lead No. 10 Field Hockey Past SCSU, 5-2

Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior midfielder Linsey Fernandes (Ajax, Ont.) and junior midfielder Lisa Duckles (Netcong, N.J.) combined for three goals and five assists to lead the tenth-ranked American International College field hockey team to a 5-2 Northeast-10 win at Southern Connecticut State University Thursday night.

Fernandes scored one goal, which proved to be the game-winner, and assisted on each of AIC's other four goals for a career-high six points. Duckles scored two goals and assisted on another for a career-high five-point game.

The Yellow Jackets improved to 11-6 for the season and 6-3 in the Northeast-10, while the Owls dropped to 5-12 for the year and 2-7 in conference play.

Senior back Randi Schock (Stamford, Conn.) put SCSU ahead 1-0 in the 27th-minute after the Owls were awarded a penalty stroke and Duckles answered for AIC just 1:38 later off a penalty corner to tie the match at one.

The score remained tied until Duckles scored her second goal of the match 10 minutes into the second half, but that lead didn't last long as sophomore forward Sarah Cebry (Burlington, Conn.) tied it at two 3:23 later.

Fernandes gave the Yellow Jackets the lead for good when she fired a shot home from the top of the circle off a corner in the 56th-minute and senior forward Amanda McLean (Branford, Conn.) made it a two-goal game in the 65th-minute after shooting the ball over the top SCSU sophomore goalkeeper Robin Donaldson (Canton, Conn.).

Senior forward Jessica Hall (Higganum, Conn.) closed out the scoring with 2:54 left in the match as she tipped home a shot from Fernandes off another corner.

Hall and McLean also had one assist each in the game, while senior back Jessica Grimm (Frankford, N.J.) recorded two assists. Freshman back Amanda Johannes (Killingworth, Conn.) was credited with two defensive saves.

Senior goalkeeper Kim Steiner (Little Falls, N.Y.) recorded nine saves in to earn the win in goal, while Donaldson recorded nine saves in taking the loss.

AIC outshot the Owls 28-16 in the match and had a 13-8 advantage in penalty corners, four of which resulted in a goal for the Yellow Jackets.

AIC will close out the 2011 regular season Saturday when it travels to fifth-ranked UMass Lowell for a 1 p.m. Northeast-10 match.
