SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The American International College men's basketball team survived a late Southern New Hampshire University run to record a 73-59 Northeast-10 victory over the Penmen Saturday afternoon at Butova Gymnasium.
The Yellow Jackets improved to 11-3 overall and 7-2 in the Northeast-10 with their eighth win in the last nine games, while SNHU dropped to 5-8 overall and 1-8 in conference play.
Junior forward
Isiah Wallace (Springfield, Mass.) registered a double-double with 23 points and 11 boards to lead AIC. He now stands 21st on the Yellow Jackets' career scoring list with 1,118 career points.
Senior guard
Allen Aragbaye (Corona, Calif.) scored a gam-hiogh 24 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field with four threes, while senior forward
Anthony Thomas (Baltimore, Md.) posted a double-double with 10 points and 13 boards.
Junior guard
Adrian Hynes-Guery (Montreal, Que.) also scored 10 points, while senior forward
Denzel Jackson (Philadelphia, Pa.) pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds with four points and a game-high six assists.
Senior forward Cory Vejraska (Alachua, Fla.) scored 13 points with three rebounds and two assists to lead SNHU, while sophomore guard Billy Marsden (Pelham, N.H.) added 10 points off the bench. Junior guard Lucas Croteau (Rochester, N.H.) contributed nine points, going 3-for-5 from downtown.
AIC never trailed in the game, opening the contest with a 12-3 run over the first five minutes of the contest. The Yellow Jackets led 41-26 at the half and were up by as many as 25, 55-30, 5:22 into the second stanza.
The lead was 20 midway through the second half before an 11-4 Penmen run brought them back within 10, 69-59, with just over a minute to go. They wouldn't score again in the final 1:13 as the AIC held on for the win.
The Yellow Jackets shot 45 percent (27-60) from the field and were a perfect 14-for-14 at the free throw line, while SNHU shot 36.4 percent (20-55) from the floor, 45.5 percent (10-22) and were 9-for-14 from the line. AIC dominated on the glass, out-rebounding the Penmen 49-23 in the game with 15 offensive boards.
The Yellow Jackets will next travel to Bentley University for a 7:30 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
