SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The American International College men's basketball team was held to just one point in the final 2:48 of the game but managed to hold off a late charge by the College of Saint Rose to register a 47-45 Northeast-10 victory Sunday afternoon at Butova Gymnasium.
The Yellow Jackets, who are receiving votes in the latest NABC Coaches' Poll, improved to 10-2 overall and 6-1 in the Northeast-10 with their seventh straight win. The Golden Knights fell to 9-3 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
The 47 points are the fewest-ever scored in a win during the shot clock era, which started in 1985-86. The previous mark was 54 points in a four-point win at the University of the Sciences (Pa.) December 29, 2007. The fewest points ever scored in a victory were 21 in a 21-16 win over Bridgewater State during the 1938-39 campaign.
Junior forward
Isiah Wallace (Springfield, Mass.) scored nine points with nine rebounds, and three steals to lead AIC, while sophomore guard
Ricky Hudson (Sewell, N.J.) also scored nine points coming off the bench. Senior guard
Allen Aragbaye (Corona, Calif.) and junior guard
Adrian Hynes-Guery (Montreal, Que.) added seven points each.
Junior forward Brian Hanuschak (Cumberland, R.I.) scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed nine boards to lead Saint Rose, while senior guard Shea Bromirski (Cambridge, N.Y.) added 12 points with five rebounds and five assists.
Neither team was able get much going on the offensive end. AIC shot just 28 percent (14-50) from the floor and 25 percent (5-20) from three, while the Golden Knights shot 30.8 percent (16-52) from the field and 25 percent (3-12) from beyond the arc.
The Yellow Jackets led 26-25 heading into the locker room at the half after Hynes-Guery sank a pair of free throws with 57 seconds left in the first half.
AIC used an early 10-2 second half run to open a nine-points lead, 38-29, and were up 40-31 before a 10-0 run by the Gold Knights gave them a 41-40 lead with 8:19 on the clock. The Yellow Jackets regained the lead for good just over a minute later when Hudson drained a three and held on for the win.
Wallace made it a five-point game after stripping freshman guard Kareem Thomas (Queens, N.Y.) and converting the layup at the other end with 2:48 to left in the game. Hanuschak answered by knocking down a jumper on the ensuing possession and then brought Saint Rose back within one after laying the ball in with 1:56 to go.
Wallace made it a two-point game after going 1-for-2 at the line with 11 seconds on the clock to put the Yellow Jackets for the 47-45 final. The Golden Knights had one last shot to tie or win the game, but sophomore guard Andre Pope's (White Plains, N.Y.) baseline jumper fell short as time expired.
AIC will next travel to Merrimack College Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
