Garden City, N.Y. - The American International College baseball team dropped a 3-1 decision at Adelphi University Thursday afternoon in a Northeast-10 contest. The Panthers improved to 19-7 overall and 6-3 in the NE-10, while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 6-16 overall and 3-9 in conference play.
Adelphi took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after senior third baseman Chris Weidlein (Merrick, N.Y.) singled to center to drive in right fielder Justin Ciamillo (Sayville, N.Y.) with two outs. Ciamillo singled to left and then stole second to get into scoring position.
The Panthers were on the board again in the second when first baseman Anthony Anzalone (Rocky Point, N.Y.) scored on a double steal and second baseman Craig Matteo (Herricks, N.Y.) later crossed the plate on a single to center off the bat of junior catcher Richard McCarren (Seaford, N.Y.).
That was all the offence junior pitcher Jonathan Gonzalez (New York, N.Y.) would need as he tossed a two-hitter, allowing one unearned run with seven strikeouts. Freshman pitcher
Matt Lee (Stratford, Conn.) also went the distance for AIC, allowing three runs on six hits in eight innings.
The Yellow Jackets broke Adelphi's bid for a shutout on the top of the sixth when junior center fielder
Mike Tranghese (Springfield, Mass.) scored on an error. He reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and then swiped third. McCarren threw the ball away as he attempted to throw out Tranghese at third, allowing him to score.
AIC will next travel to Franklin Pierce University Saturday for a Northeast-10 doubleheader that will get under way at noon.
