Long Ball Lifts Southern Connecticut Past Baseball 3-1

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The American International College baseball team dropped a 3-1 Northeast-10 contest to Southern Connecticut State University Sunday afternoon at AIC Park. Junior designated hitter #Dan Mooney# (Bennington, Vt.) went 2-for-4 for the Yellow Jackets.

The Owls (14-5-1, 8-1 NE-10) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as sophomore right fielder Jordan Hockenberry (Glastonbury, Conn.) doubled down the left field line to score sophomore designated hitter Eric Schlitter (Guilford, Conn.) from second and made it a 3-0 game on sophomore shortstop Ryan Geffert's (Plymouth, Pa.) two-run blasé over the center field fence in the third.

AIC (5-12,2-5 NE-10) got on the board in the fourth when senior left fielder #Dan Bassani# (Naples, Fla.) scored from second on freshman #Pete Kelley#'s (Enfield, Conn.) single to right center, but that was all the offense the Yellow Jackets could muster in the game.

AIC had a chance to tie the game in the ninth with runners on first and second with just one out, but junior reliever Michael Johnston (Thomaston, Conn.) got sophomore pinch hitter #Julien Concepcion# (Woodstock Valley, Conn.) to fly out to center and center fielder #Mike Tranghese# (Springfield, Mass.) to ground out to end the game.

Senior pitcher Ed Bethke (Branford, Conn.) allowed just three hits and struck out four in six innings to earn the win for SCSU, while Johnston earned the save after tossing three scoreless innings of relief. Junior pitcher #Sean Stevenson# (Holyoke, Mass.) went the distance in taking the loss, allowing two earned runs on six hits with four Ks.

The two teams will meet again Wednesday at Southern Connecticut for a 3:30 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
