Hits Hard to Come By in 5-3 loss to Pace

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Four runs in the fifth inning propelled Pace past the American International College baseball team 5-3 on a rainy Tuesday afternoon. With the loss the Yellow Jackets drop to 3-10-0 on the year and to 0-3-0 in the conference, while the win improved the Setters to 5-11-0 overall and to 1-4-0 in the NE-10.

After four scoreless innings of play, Pace tallied four runs on two errors and a two-run double in the fifth and would not look back. The Yellow Jackets looked to make a comeback scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but to no avail as the Setters added an insurance run in the eight for a 5-3 victory.

Junior third baseman #Dan Mooney# (Bennington, Vt.) went 1-2 on the day with a run scored, while senior left fielder #Dan Bassani# (Naples, Fla.) went 1-4 at the dish. Junior designated hitter #Kyle McNiff# (Westford, Mass.) went 1-3 from the four hole.

Senior center fielder Chris Spatkowski (Bristol, Conn.) led the way for Pace going 3-5 with an RBI and a run scored, while classmate, left fielder Mike Torello (Cheshire, Conn.) went 2-5 with two RBI's.

Junior pitcher #Sean Stevenson# (Holyoke, Mass.) went seven innings allowing four runs on four hits and five walks with eight strikeouts in the loss for AIC. Sophomore reliever #Geoff McCowat# (Sterling, Va.) tossed two shutout innings of relief with three K's.

Junior pitcher Mike Sciarretta (Stamford, Conn.) also went seven strong innings surrendering three runs, two earned, on two hits and two walks, while striking out nine to earn the win. Senior closer Frank Luongo (West Harrison, N.Y.) threw two scoreless innings allowing just one hit while fanning four for the save.

The Yellow Jackets were held to three hits, while leave four on base.

Next up, AIC finishes out the home-and-home with Pace on Thursday in New York at 3:30 p.m.
