Big First Inning Propels Assumption Past Baseball Team, 6-2

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Assumption College plates five runs in the top of the first inning en route to a 6-2 Northeast-10 win over the American International College baseball team Wednesday afternoon at AIC Park. It was the conference-opener for both teams.

Junior shortstop Shawn Frigon (East Freetown, Mass.) singled to left to start the game and then came around on junior left fielder Wally Derosier's (Shrewsbury, Mass.) homer that just cleared the fence down the right field line, giving the Greyhounds (9-4) and early 2-0 lead. Assumption then loaded the bases on three straight singles and took the lead for good on junior first baseman Drew Dombkowski's (Southampton, Mass.) RBI-single up the middle that scored junior right fielder Mike Foley (Worcester, Mass.) from third.

The Greyhound tacked on two more runs in the top of the first to take a 5-0 lead and extended that lead to 6-0 in the top of the third as freshman catcher Pete Creamer (Groveland, Mass.) greeted redshirt freshman pitcher #Chris Goonan# (Chicopee, Mass.) with a solo shot down the right field line.

Senior left fielder #Dan Bassani# (Naples, Fla.) got the Yellow Jackets (2-6) on the board with a two-run blast over the left field fence in the bottom of the eight, which also scored sophomore center fielder #Greg Caruso# (Bronx, N.Y.), for the 6-2 final. AIC threatened to score twice in the early going, but stranded two runners in the first and third innings.

Sophomore Frank Flynn (Worcester, Mass.) allowed just four hits and fanned seven in seven innings to get the win on the mound, while junior #Sean Stevenson# (Holyoke, Mass.) took the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) in two innings.

Goonan settled down after that first at-bat, allowing one run on four hits in five innings of relief for the Yellow Jackets. Redshirt freshman #Pete Kelley# (Enfield, Conn.) allowed two hits over the final two innings.

Senior designated hitter Tim Scafidi (Worcester, Mass.) went 3-for-4 at the played for Assumption, while Derosier finished 2-for-4 with the two-run homer. Bassani also finished 2-for-4 with a two-run bomb for AIC.

The Yellow Jackets and Greyhounds will meet again tomorrow afternoon in Worcester for a 3:30 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
