New Haven, Conn. - Senior forward #
Aikeem Vanderhorst# (Bay Shore, N.Y.) scored a game-high 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field and a 5-for-6 performance at the line to lead the American International College men's basketball team to a 72-58 Northeast-10 win at Southern Connecticut State University Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets improved to 11-13 overall and 9-10 in the Northeast-10, while the Owls dropped to 2-22 overall and 1-17 in conference play.
AIC held a slim two-point lead at the half, 32-30, and used an 11-4 run to open the second half and extend its lead to nine, 43-34. Southern Connecticut evened the score at 49 on a layup from senior center John Mazzarella (Wallingford, Conn.) midway through the second half, but the Yellow Jackets responded with an 8-0 run to open a 57-49 advantage.
Vanderhorst started the run with a traditional three-point play and it was capped by a free throw from sophomore forward #
Isiah Wallace# (Springfield, Mass.). AIC eventually pulled away at the free throw line for the 72-58 final.
Sophomore guard #
Adrian Hynes-Guery# (Montreal, Que.) fell just short of a double-double with 18 points and nine boards for AIC. He was 7-for-10 from the floor and went 4-for-6 at the line. Wallace nearly notched a triple-double with 15 points, 10 boards and seven assists.
Sophomore forward Kieran Ramsey (North Holywood, Calif.) scored 15 points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for SCSU. Freshman guard Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) added 11 points.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Wednesday when they host Assumption College in a 7:30 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
