MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior quarterback
Rob Parent (West Warwick, R.I.) completed 11-of-23 passes for 227 yards and four touchdowns to lead the American International College football team to a 27-7 Northeast-10 victory at Saint Anselm College Saturday afternoon at Grappone Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets evened their record at 3-3 for the season and improved to 3-1 in the Northeast-10 with their third win in four tries. The loss drops the Hawks to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
AIC's 27 points and 404 yards of total offense were season-highs, while the 181 net rushing yards were just six shy of the 187 yards gained on the ground week three in a win over Stonehill College. The Yellow Jackets were averaging just 12.6 points per game heading into the day.
Junior wide receiver
Andre Samuels (Linden, N.J.) caught four passes for 119 yards, including a 65-yard scoring catch in the opening quarter. Junior full back/tight end
Trevor Perryman (Centereach, N.Y.) had three catches for 41 yards and two scores, while freshman wide receiver
Cal Brownridge (Newark, N.J.) also pulled in three receptions for 46 yards and one TD.
Sophomore running back
Courtney Stephenson (Paterson, N.J.) racked up 139 yards on just seven carries, including an 89-yard jaunt that setup AIC's fourth touchdown of the day.
The Yellow Jackets wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. After the defense forced the Hawks turn the ball over on downs at the AIC 48-yard line on the opening drive of the game, Parent connected with Brownridge on a 34-yard scoring pass on the fourth play of the drive to put the Yellow Jackets ahead 7-0 3:01 into the game.
AIC struck quickly again on its second possession of the game when Samuels pulled in a 65-yard scoring pass from Parent on the second play from scrimmage with 5:41 remaining in the opening period. Each of the first two scores resulted from tremendous efforts after the catch by Brownridge and Samuels.
Senior linebacker
Terrence Holley (Bogota, N.J.) put the Yellow Jackets in prime scoring position midway through the second quarter when he picked off freshman quarterback Tyrae Woodson-Sam (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) at the Saint Anselm 25. Parent then found Perryman in the corner of the end zone on the next play of the game to extend AIC's lead to 21-0 with 7:10 left in the first half.
The Yellow Jackets forced another turnover on downs at their own three-yard line with 5:09 remaining in the third frame and went right down the field to score again. Stephenson took the ball on the first play of the drive and went 89 yards to the Hawks' eight-yard line, setting up Perryman's second scoring catch of the day.
Saint Anselm spoiled AIC's bid for a shutout when freshman running back Keith Charles (Laurel, Md.) scored on a two-yard run with 8:43 to go in the game. He finished the game with 58 yards on 20 carries.
Woodson-Sam completed 25-of-42 passes for 175 yards and carried the ball 21 times for an additional 92 yards. He was also picked off three times in the game. Freshman wide receiver Justin Bernard (Cambridge, Mass.) pulled in four passes for 79 yard to lead the Saint Anslem receivers.
Senior linebacker
Nick Abraham (Tewksbury, Mass.) and senior defensive back
Allen Bush (Newark, N.J.) had 11 tackles each to lead the Yellow Jackets. Abraham also had two tackles for loss and one sack, while Bush had 1.5 tackles for loss. Sophomore linebacker Daruis Evans (Linden, N.J.) had nine tackles (six solo).
Holley and sophomore defensive back
Markell Rice (New Rochelle, N.Y.) each had seven tackles and one interception. Freshman defensive lineman
Justin Tervo (Millbury, Mass.) also had seven tackles, while senior defensive back
Nathaniel Ricks (Clinton, Md.) had five tackles, two tackles for loss and one interception.
Sophomore linebacker Brendan Timmons (Franklin, Mass.) led Saint Anselm with eight tackles, while senior defensive back Mark Colantonio (Londonderry, N.H.) had six tackles.
The Yellow Jackets will next host the University of New Haven in a Northeast-10 contest October 16 at 1 p.m. from Ronald J. Abdow Field.
