BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Sophomore forward
Lisa Duckles (Netcong, N.J.) converted her second penalty stroke of the season with 1:29 remaining in the game to give the American International College field hockey team a 3-2 non-conference win at seventh-ranked C.W. Post Tuesday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets earned their school-record ninth victory of the season as they improved to 9-6 overall, while the Pioneers fell to 8-7 for the year. It was AIC's second win over a ranked opponent this season, the other being a 3-1 win over then No. 9 Mercyhurst College September 5.
Senior back
Kat Heterbring (Java Center, N.Y.) gave the Yellow Jackets an early 1-0 when score scored from 10 yards out off a pass from junior midfielder
Linsey Fernandes (Ajax, Ont.) 9:30 into the match.
C.W. Post drew even 4:17 later on a goal from senior forward Amanda Nann (Hamburg, N.J.) and then took the lead at 21:39 on freshman forward Carlee Dragon's (Bridgewater, N.J.) goal, giving the Pioneers a 2-1 lead at the half.
The scored remained that way until junior forward
Amanda McLean (Branford, Conn.) scored her school-record 10th goal of the season 9:41 into the second half to tie the game at two goals apiece.
AIC had good sustained pressure in the offensive end in the closing minutes of regulation before being awarded a penalty stroke in the 79th minute. Duckles was given the opportunity to take the shot and she scored for her second conversion in as many tries this season. The first proved to be the game-winner against Mercyhurst.
Junior goalie
Kim Steiner (Little Falls, N.Y.) tallied 14 saves, nine of which came in the first half, to earn her school-record ninth win of the season. Senior goalie Cortney Colern (Barker, N.Y.) had five stops in taking the loss.
The Yellow Jackets were outshot 16-6 in the first half, but were much improved in the second as shots were 11-10 in favor of the Pioneers. C.W. Post had a 12-10 advantage in penalty corners.
AIC will return to action Saturday when it hosts Saint Anslem College at noon in a Northeast-10 contest at Ronald J. Abdow Field.
