Late Rally Falls Short, Men's Soccer Drops 3-2 Decision at SCSU

Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore forward Conor Doyle (Douglas, Isle of Man) scored one goal and assisted on another, but it was not enough as the American International College men's soccer team dropped a 3-2 Northeast-10 contest at Southern Connecticut State University Wednesday night.

The Owls improved to 11-2-1 overall and 8-2-1 in the Norhteast-10, while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 6-8-1 overall and 4-6-1 in conference play.

The game was scoreless until the 39th-minute when senior forward Harry Appiah (Pawtucket, R.I.)) netted an unassisted tally to give SCSU a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

That lead was extended to 2-0 when freshman forward Doural Scott (New haven, Conn.) netted his first goal of the match in the 64th minute. He later scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 75th-minute, giving the Owls a 3-1 lead with 15 minutes to go in the game.

AIC got on the board when senior forward Sean Stevenson (Holyoke, Mass.) scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season in 66th-minute to pull the Yellow Jackets within one, 2-1, off a cross from Doyle. Doyle later scored in the 81st-minute off a feed from junior forward Thomas Denomme (North Smithfield, R.I.).

The Yellow Jackets had one last chance to tie the match in the closing minutes, but sophomore midfielder Callum Congreve's (Sheffield, England) shot was off the mark and SCSU held on for the 3-2 win.

Junior keeper Andrew Esposito (East Haven, Conn.) had two stops to earn the decision in goal, while junior keeper James Taber (Lierpool N.Y.) had one save in taking the loss.

The Owls outshot AIC 8-2 in the first half, while the Yellow Jackets had a 6-4 advantage in the second. The Owls were awarded the only three corner kicks in the match.

AIC will next head to Saint Anselm College Saturday for a 2 p.m. Northeast-10 match.
