Stonehill Rallies for 56-55 Win Over Men's Basketball Team

Box Score

Easton, Mass. – Stonehill College went on a 12-2 run over the final 5:05 to pull out a 56-55 Northeast-10 victory over the American International College men's basketball team Wednesday night at Merkert Gymnasium. The Skyhawks, who are receiving votes in the latest NABC Coaches' Poll, improved to 14-3 overall and 11-1 in the NE-10, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 7-10 overall and 5-7 in conference play.

AIC led for most of the game and was up by nine after senior forward #Aikeem Vanderhorst# (Bay Shore, N.Y.) sank a pair of free throws to make it a 53-44 contest with 5:05 left on the clock. The Yellow Jackets were held without a basket and scored just two points after that as Stonehill registered the come-from-behind win.

Senior forward A.J. Rodowitz (Monroe Township, N.J.) took over the game from there, scoring 10 of the Skyhawks' final 12 points. He started the run with a traditional three-point play, making a layup as he was fouled and converting the free throw that followed, and scored the last two points of the game at the free throw line with 10 seconds to go in the contest.

Senior guard Randall Stallworth (Toms River, N.J.) drove to the basket, but his layup wouldn't go down and Rudowitz grabbed the biggest rebound of the game. He was the fouled by sophomore guard #Adrian Hynes-Guery# (Montreal, Que.), sending him to the line with a chance to tie the game or give Stonehill the lead.

Hynes-Guery had one last chance to win the game for the Yellow Jackets, but his jumper was blocked by Rudowitz. AIC was up 55-54 when freshman guard #Ricky Hudson# (Sewell, N.J.) was fouled with 18 seconds to go, but he missed his only two attempts from the line and Stallworth pulled down the rebound.

Rudowitz finished the game with 16 points, six boards, four assists and two steals, while Stallworth ended the game with 14 points, four assists and three boards. Junior guard Daniel Heppert (Richmond, Va.) contributed eight points and four boards.

Senior guard #Mike Troll# (New York, N.Y.) scored a game-high 19 points with eight rebounds, two assists and two steals to lead AIC, while Hynes-Guery finished with 11 points, four rebounds and two assists. Hudson added nine points and four rebounds and junior guard #Byron Richards# (Adelphia, Md.) scored eight points with four rebounds.

The Skyhawks shot 41.5 percent (22-53) from the field, 20 percent (2-10) from three and were 10-for-11 at the free throw line. The Yellow Jackets shot 37.5 percent (18-48) from the field, 31.8 percent (7-22) from three and were 12-of-15 from the line.

AIC led 30-27 at the half and led by as many as 10, 45-35, after a Hudson layup with 9:53 to go in the second half, capping an 8-0 Yellow Jacket run that saw Stonehill go scoreless for 5:38. Stonehill's largest lead came very early on as the Skyhawks opened the game with a 12-5 run over the opening 7:10.

AIC will next host Franklin Pierce University Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Butova Gymnasium.
