Yellow Jackets Come Up Short Against Merrimack, Lose 5-3

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The American International College field hockey team lost Saturday afternoon as Merrimack netted two late goals to claim a 5-3 victory. With the loss the Yellow Jackets fall to 3-7 overall and to 2-3 in the Northeast-10, while the win propels the Warriors to 8-5 this season and to 3-1 in the conference. Freshman #Lisa Duckles# (Netcong, N.J.) tallied a goal and an assist for AIC.

Freshman #Imani Ferguson# (Ajax, Ont.) gave the Yellow Jackets an early 1-0 lead scoring just over nine-minutes into the game with an assist from classmate #Gin Bromberg# (Ashfield, Mass.). After Merrimack knotted the game at 1-1, Duckles put AIC back on top netted an unassisted goal in the 24th-minute.

The lead didn't last long as the Warriors tied the game at 2-2, 15-seconds into the second half. Freshman April Daugherty (Lincoln, R.I.) gave Merrimack its first lead of the game, when she found the back of the net with an assist from senior Katelin Gisonno (Georgetown, Mass.). Daugherty led the Warriors with two goals and an assist. Graduate student #Jacki Lapointe# (Danvers, Mass.) evened the score at 3-3 for the Yellow Jackets when she tallied a goal at the 55-minute mark with a hand from Duckles. Merrimack scored two goals in the final 13-minutes to score the 5-3 win.

Sophomore #Kim Steiner# (Little Falls, N.Y.) stopped 10 shots for AIC, while her counterpart, freshman Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee, Mass.) made 14 saves to record the win.

The Yellow Jackets outshot the Warriors 30-15 and held a 13-1 advantage in corners.

Next up, AIC hosts No. 6 Stonehill in the programs first ever night game at John Homer Miller Field on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
