Field Hockey Returns Home with 2-1 Overtime Over Assumption

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The American International College field hockey team went two years between home games and made that return a memorable one with a 2-1 overtime victory over Assumption College Thursday afternoon at John Homer Miller Field. Sophomore forward #Amanda McLean# (Branford, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal in the 79th-minute for the Yellow Jackets.

AIC improved to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the Northeast-10, while the Greyhounds fell to 1-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

The Yellow Jackets trailed 1-0 when junior forward Brittany Boyle (Grafton, Mass.) put Assumption on the board in the 24th-minute, but that lead didn't last long as freshman forward #Gin Bromberg# (Ashfield, Mass.) scored 5:34 later to tie the game at 1-1.

Both teams had quality scoring chances after that, but the both goalies were up to the task as the game went to overtime when McLean scored off a penalty corner 8:19 into the extra period to give AIC its second win in as many games. Junior back #Kat Heterbring# (Java Center, N.Y.) assisted on the play after sending the ball to McLean on the corner.

Sophomore goalie #Kim Steiner# (Little Falls, N.Y.) made eight saves, including three in the second half and two in overtime to improve her record to 2-3 for the season. Junior goalie Danielle Luongo (Northboro, Mass.) had five stops in taking the loss for the Greyhounds.

The Yellow Jackets out shot Assumption 20-10 in the game and had a 16-10 advantage in corners.

AIC returns to action Saturday when it travels to UMass Lowell for a 1 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
