Baseball Earns Split With Stonehill

Box Score-Game 1, Box Score-Game 2

Springfield, Mass. – The American International College baseball team split a Northeast-10 doubleheader with Stonehill at AIC Park Thursday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets took the opener 6-3, but dropped game two 7-2. AIC's record is now 6-19 overall and 4-9 in the NE-10, while the Skyhawks stand at 15-12 and 7-6.

The Yellow Jackets exploded for five runs in the seventh inning of game one to take a commanding 6-3 lead. The scoring started when senior right fielder #John Thorpe# (East Longmeadow, Mass.) hit a two-run homer to left field, with two out, to score sophomore shortstop #Dan Mooney# (Bennington, Vt.). AIC took the lead on a base hit through the right side, by senior first baseman #Kevin Farrell# (Wilbraham, Mass.), that plated sophomore pitcher/designated hitter #Dillon Fontaine# (Amenia, N.Y.).

Fontaine went the distance to earn his second win of the season for the Yellow Jackets. He allowed three runs, one earned, and struck out five. Senior Andy Hillier (Hanover, Mass.) lasted 6.2 innings, gave up four runs, two earned, and had seven Ks for Stonehill.

AIC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two as junior left fielder Dan Bassani (Naples, Fla.) drilled a ball to the fence for a triple to score Farrell and Fontaine. Errors would cost the Yellow Jackets in the third as they allowed the Skyhawks to pick up three runs and take the lead. The tying and go-ahead runs scored on a sacrifice fly to deep center field by sophomore third baseman Scott Hackett (Bangor, Maine).

Freshman Matt Olsen (Winchester, Mass.) pitched five innings, allowed two runs, and struck out five for the win. Sophomore #Sean Stevenson# (Holyoke, Mass.) went 4.1 innings and allowed five runs, one earned, in the loss.

The Yellow Jackets return to action Saturday at Southern New Hampshire for a 12 p.m. first pitch.
