Baseball Drops NE-10 Season Opener to SNHU

Game 1
Game 2

Springfield, Mass. – The American International College baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Northeast-10 opponent Southern New Hampshire at AIC Park Saturday afternoon. The Penmen took the first game 4-2 and came from behind to win the second 6-5. The loss dropped the Yellow Jackets to 2-12 overall and 0-2 in the NE-10, while SNHU improved to 5-8 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

Sophomore second baseman Koby Thibault (Salisbury, Mass.) led off the sixth inning for the Penmen with a base hit up the middle and later advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt. He then scored what would prove to be the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly by junior third baseman Eric Pelletier (Beverly, Mass.).

In the bottom of the ninth senior first baseman Kevin Farrell (Wilbraham, Mass.) hit his fourth homerun of the season, but it would not be enough as the Yellow Jackets would lose the first game of the doubleheader 4-2.

Senior Ryan Quinn (Lebanon, Conn.) went the distance for SNHU to earn the victory. He struck out 14 batters, while allowing just two runs through nine innings.

Sophomore Dillon Fontaine (Amenia, N.Y.) lasted seven innings in his third start of the season for AIC. He gave up four runs, all unearned, and had six strikeouts in the loss.

In the second game the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two-run doubles from senior center fielder Dan Fey (Plymouth, Mass.) and right fielder Fontaine in the second inning.

Trailing 5-2 in the top of the ninth the Penmen struck back with four runs to take the lead. Junior first baseman Robert Wronski (Arlington, Mass.) doubled to score senior right fielder Scott Strong (Naperville, Ill.) for the go ahead run.

Freshman Brad Monroe (Hampton Falls, N.H.) started for SNHU, but lasted only three innings, and allowed five runs on four hits. Graduate Student Ryan Hagan (Bedford, N.H.) earned the win in two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, while sophomore Bryant Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.) earned the save the seal the win for the Penmen.

Sophomore Sean Stevenson (Holyoke, Mass.) started for the Yellow Jackets and gave up just one run in five innings. Freshman John Hanna (Dudley, Mass.) took the loss for AIC by giving up five runs, two earned, in four innings of work.

The Yellow Jackets play again tomorrow at Southern New Hampshire at 12 p.m.
