Fort Pierce, Fla. – The American International College baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader with Pittsburgh-Johnstown at the Fort Pierce Complex Wednesday afternoon. In game one the Yellow Jackets were defeated 6-5 by the Mountain Cats, then 7-6 in the nightcap. AIC dropped to 1-7 overall while Pitt-Johnstown improved to 10-2.
Senior center fielder #Dan Fey# (Plymouth, Mass.) led off the first inning with a single and scored on a double by junior left fielder #Dan Bassani# (Naples, Fla.). Bassani later crossed the plate on a base hit by sophomore second baseman #Nicholas Devine# (Springfield, Mass.).
The Mountain Cats scored four runs between the fourth and sixth innings to take a 4-2 lead, but the Yellow Jackets responded with three runs in the bottom half of the sixth. Pitt-Johnstown tied the game again in the seventh and scored the winning run in the eighth when senior first baseman Matt Hanley (Delmont, Pa.) doubled and scored on a single by Mangini.
Sophomore #Dillon Fontaine# (Amenia, N.Y.) pitched six innings in the start for AIC. He allowed four runs, all earned, and racked up eight strikeouts. Freshman #John Hanna# (Dudley, Mass.) took the loss for the Yellow Jackets after giving up one run in two innings of work.
Senior Eric Faint (Johnstown, Pa.) registered the win, his third of the season, in three innings of relief for sophomore starter Jon Moore (Leechburg, Pa.). Moore took the mound for four innings, while allowing two runs off of four hits.
In the second game, the Mountain Cats pulled out a 7-6 victory on a walk-off single by Hanley to score Barbera. Sophomore pitcher Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) started for Pitt-Johnstown and went 4.2 innings, while giving up just one unearned run. Senior Bill Wasko (Bethel Park, Pa.) earned the win in 2.1 innings of relief.
Freshman third baseman #Tyler McElman# (Marlborough, Mass.) went 2-2 with two runs batted in and one scored in the loss for the Yellow Jackets. Senior #Dan Nugent# (Cambridge, Mass.) lasted 5.2 innings and gave up five runs, four earned, for AIC. Freshman #Geoff McCowat# (Sterling, Va.) took the loss in a three inning relief appearance.
The Yellow Jackets return to action Thursday against Bentley at Rollins College at 12 p.m.
